100th Anniversary Display at Midlothian Library

Included in the display are a former sash and Junior and Cadette books. The display will be up through February. If you get a chance, stop by to see it with your daughter or other scouts, too!

Selling Girl Scout cookies teaches girls business skills

Those colorful boxes of Girl Scout cookies now on sale are more than just an annual sweet treat.
They're also giving the girls who sell them some early lessons in business smarts, from learning how to count change to developing marketing plans to setting--and reaching--goals.
"One of the most important is people skills; learning to talk to people, learning to accept 'no' and 'yes' gracefully," said Tracey Miller, service unit director for the 17 troops in the Battlefield Girl Scouts.
This year's round of sales, which launched Jan. 13 and will end April 1, also kicks off the Girl Scouts' 100th anniversary. The organization got its start when Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low gathered 18 girls from Savannah, Ga., on March 12, 1912, for a local Girl Scout meeting.
Members of the Battlefield troops have set their sales goals higher this year because part of the proceeds will be used to help defray the cost of a trip this summer to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, a Girl Scout national center in Savannah. Other trips will be planned for the girls who are unable to go.
Miller, who also leads Troop 784, said the 29 girls in her unit have set a total goal of selling 4,000 boxes this year, and one girl has a personal goal of selling 1,000. If she reaches it, she'll get a brick with her name on it placed at the Pamunkey Ridge Girl Scout Camp in Doswell.
"We just took in our initial orders," Miller said. "So far, she's sold 400."
Cookie sales season begins with training sessions, which cover sales techniques and safety issues. The girls also set their goals and discuss ideas for encouraging sales, such as telling potential customers that buying cookies will enable them to meet those goals or asking if they'd like to donate a box to the troop's community service project or a Girl Scout Council approved "gift of caring."
"Last year we went to Quantico and delivered donated cookies," said Miller. "The girls learn about giving that way."
Girl Scouts can sell cookies by going door to door with their parents or by "tailgating" with their troop leaders, that is piling boxes of cookies into red wagons and walking with the leaders through neighborhoods to sell door to door.

Troop 3189 Completes Community Service Projects

Troop 3189 has been hard at work completing their community service projects. Some of their accomplishments include:

Having a Juliette Birthday party and donating all the presents to the Salvation Army.
Continuing to collect peanut butter for the Fredericksburg Food Bank, as they are in SEVERE need for this. 3189 donates about 30 jars a month and will continues doing so until June.
Volunteering at the Greenfield Nursing Home. The girls go and visit the residents and play games on the weekends or when they have time. Troop 3189 also has 3 girls working on their Bronze Award with them.

Adventure to DC!

Girl Scouts from Troop 585 of Hopewell, Troop 318 of Dinwiddie, and Boy Scouts from Hopewell Pack 282 were recent visitors to Our Nation’s Capitol, Washington, D.C. The group visited historic sites such as the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Institute, Lincoln Memorial and The Capitol. The highlights of the trip included touring the White House, pictured above, and enjoying an afternoon at the National Zoo. The scouts were accompanied on their chartered bus tour by family members and friends, totaling 60 people.

Girl Scout Troop 585 from Hopewell recently participated in their combination Court of Awards, Bridging and Fly – Up Ceremonies, in front of a packed house of over 100 people attending. The Court of Awards offers the opportunity for Girl Scouts to be awarded badges and patches that they have earned. The Bridging and Fly-Up Ceremonies occur when Girl Scouts have completed required activities to move to the next level of Girl Scouting. The troop consists of 28 Girl Scouts, representing Daisies, Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes from grades Kindergarten through 7th, and 10 leaders. As part of their program, all the girls joined to build a Daisy Flower Poster, using the Girl Scout Promise, Girl Scout Law, Girl Scout Motto and Girl Scout Slogan to form the center, petals, stem and leaves of the flower. A reception followed the combination ceremony.

Our troop 527 gave back to their school with their earnings from cookies this year. The girls are daisies and brownies. They sold just under 3000 bxs this year and was able to give back $450.00 to their school for playground equipment that needs repairs and remodeling. We were put in our local paper and the link is below. I wanted to be sure to share and show that girls at any age in scouting "Can make the World a Better Place".

Girl Scouts dedicate outdoor classroom

Longan Elementary’s Girl Scout Troop 207 earned the Scouts' prestigious Bronze Award for building and dedicating an outdoor classroom at the school earlier this week.

The outdoor classroom includes brand new picnic tables, birdhouses and a flower garden.

“[For] the Bronze Project we did the outdoor classroom because the [old] picnic tables, they were really splintery," said Junior Girl Scout Hannah Paulding. "So we fixed the picnic tables with new wood and we made birdhouses."

The Bronze Award is the highest honor that a Junior Girl Scout Troop can earn. In order for these fourth- and fifth-grade scouts to earn the award, they must take the time to complete a project that will make a difference in the community. The Girl Scout Council presents the award to troops that, in its estimation, have met the award's criteria.

Troop 207 completed the project at the beginning of the month after planning and working on it for an entire school year. Members completed it with the assistance of their troop leaders, Vickie Marandina and Maggie Drilling.

“We’ve been writing down choices about what to do for a long time for the Bronze Project,” said Junior Scout Raygan Lukowsky. “This one stuck out because it helped.”

At the dedication ceremony, the Juniors recited the pledge of allegiance and Girl Scout promise before officially dedicating the site.

Longan’s principal, Richard Hall, gave the closing remarks, praising the girls for their hard work and dedication.

     For one Fredericksburg Girl Scout troop, going for the gold was a pursuit that lasted from elementary days to high school graduation.
Emily Burke and Elizabeth Smith joined Troop 72 in the first grade. Alison Mullen became a part of the troop in the third grade.
The three 18-year-olds, who recently graduated from James Monroe High School, have earned their Gold Awards, Girl Scouting's highest honor.
     It's the equivalent of the Eagle Scout award for boys but not nearly as well-known.
"People don't even know what the Gold Award is," Emily said. "I'm not, like, mad, but it's kind of frustrating." Each made the choice to stick with Scouting through middle and high school, when others got busy with different activities.
   At its peak, Troop 72 had about a dozen members. But it will have to retire its numbers because the three Gold-Award winners are the last of their kind.
   "We were delighted that the girls decided to stick it out," said Elizabeth's mother, Dee Smith. She helped lead the troop, along with Emily's mother, Marjolijn Bijlefeld, and Alison's mother, Terri Mullen.
The three Scouts undertook vastly different but equally comprehensive projects. Each required at least 65 hours of work and came after the girls completed prerequisites in career counseling, leadership and volunteer projects.

EVERYONE HAS A STORY

    Emily started talking with nursing home residents about their childhood memories. She was fascinated with their stories from the Great Depression and World War II, and how everyday people witnessed historic events.
    She put together a book called "Everyone Has a Story" that includes descriptions of an outdoor pavilion in Fredericksburg and 11-cent movies, as well as harrowing tales of flying helicopters in Vietnam and being a volunteer airplane spotter during the World War II.
    She also added excerpts from journals her two great-grandmothers had written about their lives in Holland. One story talks about Nazi occupation, when Emily's ancestors were eyed suspiciously because of their dark eyes and hair. When one soldier was rude to her children, Emily's great-grandmother marched to Gestapo headquarters and complained. Emily says that's pretty cool, that this little woman would yell at soldiers with guns.
    She learned a lot from the interviews--and was surprised each time she was thanked for her interest.
    "You see how resilient the human spirit is, and how fast people will step up if they need to," she said.
   "You don't have to be a Winston Churchill or Martin Luther King Jr. to be somebody that affected history."

'A TOUCHY SUBJECT'

    Alison learned about an issue that's not talked about much--domestic violence.
At her mother's suggestion, she decided to put together care packages for women and children who suddenly have to flee their homes. The kits are distributed by the Rappahannock Area Council on Domestic Violence.
    Alison has made about 80 kits so far, filling each with shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste and other toiletries people would need if they suddenly found themselves in a new place.
She worked with other Girl Scout troops, who donated items and helped sew the kits together.
Alison discovered that, even in today's open society, when most issues are debated publicly, domestic violence is not.
   "It's a really touchy subject and not something people talk about," she said. "I think it affects a lot more people than we realize."

A GREAT WORK ETHIC

    None of the girls was surprised that Elizabeth finished her Gold Award project in 2009, two years before the others. Emily and Alison praised Elizabeth's work ethic. They said she would jump on an assignment as soon as it was given.
    "We don't have that gene," Emily said, laughing.
    Elizabeth, who's been a prayer aide at St. Mary's Catholic Church since the sixth grade, had watched how children learn things at different rates and through various learning styles.
She decided to paint a mural that illustrated their differences. She painted "Jesus" in large block letters and drew Asian, Hispanic and African-American children around the letters. Two hold a sign that states: "Let the children come to me."
    Elizabeth spent almost every day of her summer break in 2009 working on the 4- by 5-foot canvas. Her grandmother, Dee Rogers, an artist who lives in Nebraska, visited and offered her advice. Elizabeth painted the mural in acrylics and presented it to the church. "We love it," said Karen Sturtevant, St. Mary's assistant director of religious education. "It's so much about what we're about--the kids--and it was painted by a young lady."

Since Girl Scout cookie season is over until next year, local Girl Scout Troop 3370 from Midlothian is rallying their fellow Girl Scouts and their community to support the Central Virginia Food Bank Peanut Butter Drive.

The girls from this troop have participated in various charitable volunteer efforts from elementary school and now into high school with this project their current focus. The troop has gone door to door to support the peanut butter drive.

Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia will conduct its 7th Annual Girl Scout Peanut Butter Drive on June 2, 2011 as a community project with the Central Virginia Food Bank. Success Story Troop 222

We worked exceptionally hard in both nut and cookie sales this year. Our troop of mostly Brownies with a few Juniors, sold over 4500 boxes of cookies and made plans to visit Virginia Beach with a portion of our proceeds. We were working on the Wonders of Water journey throughout the year and wanted to wrap it up in a big way, so we planned a trip east and found the “Explore Virginia Beach” fun patch through the Colonial Coast Girl Scout Council.
We stopped at Doumar’s BBQ and Ice Cream shop. Doumar’s has been featured on the Food Network and actually invented the ice cream cone!

Lots of giggly girls, jumping up and down on the water, on top of the boat, and looking for dolphins!! How much more wonder can you find in water??? We drove out of the marina and into the bayside of Virginia Beach. We boated just off the shore from First Landing State Park, and clearly saw the Cape Henry lighthouses. We could easily see the light coming from the new Cape Henry lighthouse. And WE SAW DOLPHINS!
Then, it was dark and time to head home. On the bus we went. The ride home was quiet. The Little Mermaid was on the TV monitors (that too ties in with the WOW Journey adventure).

Girl Scout earns all Brownie patches before ‘bridging’ to Junior

Courtney Galligher points to a badge on her Girl Scout Brownie vest, which is completely covered in pins and badges.

“I like the camping. I have a couple camping ones. Here’s a hiking and cabin camping one,” she said.

Nine-year-old Galligher is the first one in her troop 635 who has received all 57 of the Girl Scout Try-It badges. She also earned seven additional badges.

There are four steps Girl Scouts have to complete to earn the Try-It badges. Courtney says the girls are not limited to just four steps.

Courtney and her mother Cheley Galligher, who is the troop leader, have been involved with Girl Scouts for five years. The troop meets at the J.B. Watkins Elementary school cafeteria every week.

From learning about computer safety to making puppets and dolls to writing her own song to selling over 500 boxes of cookies this year, Courtney Galligher has filled her brown vest with a number of achievements.

“I like the activities and the friendships,” she said.

Troop 635 has traveled to Camp Pamunkey ridge, had a backstage tour of The Nutcracker and has gone to the Central Virginia Food Bank for the Peanut Butter Drive. They donated peanut butter and had a tour of the bank and where the food is stored.

As far as Courtney’s favorite Girl Scout cookie goes, it is Lemon Chalet Crème.

Aside from Girl Scouts, Courtney plays violin and is on an Irish dance team at Jessica Morgan School of Dance. She aspires to be an electronic engineer, and has even built her own robot.

“I’ve always like building stuff and I just thought it might be kind of fun,” said Galligher.

Troop 635 had their Girl Scout bridging ceremony at their last meeting. Galligher bridged to a Girl Scout Junior, and plans to become an Ambassador Girl Scout in the future.

Movin' On Up - Troop 970

Girl Scout Troop #970 recently held a bridging ceremony where the girls moved up a level to Cadets.

The ceremony was held at Village View. The girls planned the entire ceremony including refreshments to be served. Each Scout made and decorated individual cakes for the event. The girls were awarded badges and patches they earned during the year.

Parents and leaders are proud of the girls' accomplishments and look forward to supporting them in all future scouting endeavors.

Gift of Caring - Troop 3263

Our Troop recently had learned that Juliette Low had helped her mother organize a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Spanish War. Considering our founder's close connection with Military, Troop 3263 wanted to continue her mission. Therefore, we choose to participate in the Girl Scout Gift of Caring program, Operation Cookies.

Many of the girls within our Troop had many connections to members of the military that are currently serving.

Troop 3263 promoted our Gift of Caring project at booth sales, with in our Church's, thru the local newspaper and thru other civic organizations. With the help of the South Hill community we meet our original goal of 168 and exceeded it by 444 boxes of cookies.

Listed below are the total of the cookies we sent

We sent 336 boxes of cookies to members of Marine H&S Company, Unit 73679, currently located in Afghanistan. Our Troop connection was Hayley Moody's Uncle is serving with this Unit.

We sent 204 boxes of cookies to members of Army, HHC 4th Brigade Combat Team, currently located in Afghanistan. Our Troop connection was Katie Taylor's Aunt is severing with this Unit.

We sent 72 boxes of cookies to members of Army, 820th Signal Company, currently located in Iraq. Our Troop connection was a member that is currently serving with this Unit went to High School with several of our parents and leaders.

Without the support of the South Hill community this project would not have been able to have made the impact that it did. It brings great joy to the Leaders, Girls and Parents of Troop 3263 to know that somewhere in Afghanistan and Iraq a solider was able to have a box of Girl Scout Cookies.

Also with this project the girls learned about the US Postal Service. Many members of our troop had the opportunity to tour the local post office. The girls also learned that it took the cookies about one week to arrive. We would mail the cookies out on Saturday and in most cases the Troops would have them by Friday morning our Saturday.

Members of Girl Scout Troop 3256 prepared a meal for the members of Sappony Ruritan Club in Stony Creek, VA. The girls used the money they earned from the meal plus the $100.00 the group donated to the girls, to send to Japan for the Earthquake Disaster Relief. A total of $230.00 was donated.

About 20 girl scouts from the Short Pump area gathered at the local American Heart Association (AHA) headquarters in Innsbrook May 15 for an afternoon of activities and education emphasizing healthy lifestyles.

Linda Carne, CEO for the Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia and a member of the AHA’s Circle of Red, spoke to brownies from Troop 3514 about fitness and nutrition. The brownies also participated in a scavenger hunt to find out nutrition facts, and topped off the afternoon with a walk around Innsbrook.

Troop members Courtney Adams and Morgan Jupe, eighth graders from Pocahontas Middle School and Short Pump Middle School respectively, organized the event as part of the requirements for their Silver Awards.

Girl Scouts Giving Back to their Communities and their Country

Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia began their 2011 Cookie Sale program in central Virginia in January and the once a year sale ended in April. This premier financial literacy program for girls generates immeasurable benefits for girls, their councils and communities in the central Virginia region. Girls set cookie goals to support their chosen activities for the year, to fund community service and leadership projects, to attend summer camp, to travel to destinations near and far and to provide events for girls in their community.
Girl Scout Troop 84, a GSCV troop located in Fredericksburg, Virginia collected donations of 300 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies during the cookie sale as gifts for sailors serving aboard the USS Shoup, of Everett Naval Base in Everett, Washington. The girls in Troop 84, a home school troop whose scouts range from 5 to 13 years of age, learned all they could about the Shoup and its mission and tracked them online as they provided assistance in the fight against Somalian pirates, fought wildfires in Australia, and participated in many other exercises during their extended period at sea. The girls were determined to collect enough cookies to make sure every sailor received a box of his or her own. To achieve that goal, the girls made posters of the ship and displayed them on easels at their cookie booths, talking to everyone who stopped at their booth about the work the ship was involved in and asking them to please consider buying an extra box for a sailor. Because of the girls' obvious knowledge of the project and their sincere desire to support the crew, some people were moved to purchase and donate an entire case at a time!
Having worked so hard to collect the cookies, the girls then had to find a way to get them shipped from here to Washington State. They found a great community partner in a local moving company, Kloke Mayflower, who shared the girls' desire to support and thank these sailors for their service and sacrifices. Kloke joined in and offered to transport all 25 cases of cookies free of charge - a showing of community spirit that saved the girls hundreds of dollars in transit fees!! The Girl Scout Cookies will leave the local Kloke Group Mayflower warehouse in Fredericksburg on May 25th with a huge send off and travel to Washington where they will be received on board by hundreds of excited sailors.
Community service projects like this one help girls to realize their full potential and become strong, confident, and resourceful citizens. Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia serves a membership of more than 15,000 girls in 30 counties and the cities of Colonial Heights, Emporia, Fredericksburg, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Richmond.

Gifts All Around – Sarah Grace Clarke ate dessert at Positive Vibe Café in South Richmond on Tuesday. Brownie Troop 971 was there as a result of the troop’s gift of caring: the girls donated 115 boxes of cookies to the café. Café chefs created recipe ideas using the cookies – and the girls sampled some of those recipes during their visit.

Troop #502 Daisy Scouts Booth Sale at Liberty Lanes was a success! The girls really enjoyed delivering 1/2 their donations to Lake Anna Elder Care yesterday. The other 1/2 will be delivered to Fred. Area Food Bank after April 15 where they are planning a trip to tour the facility and give their cookie donations.

In 2011, ten NYWOD will be honored at the National Council Session/Convention in Houston, Texas.Now is the time to apply for the National Young Women of Distinction Award. Did you show extraordinary leadership through your Gold Award? Did your efforts lead to a sustainable impact on the community? Did you go above and beyond? Then you should apply for this honor.

Who can apply?

Any Girl Scout who completed her Girl Scout Gold Award between July 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 is welcome to apply. The National Young Women of Distinction (NYWOD) are chosen from among those Gold Award recipients whose final projects demonstrated extraordinary leadership, addressed a local challenge that related to a national and/or global issue, and had a measurable and sustainable impact.

Why should you apply?

Girl Scouts who receive the NYWOD honor will receive a $3,000 college scholarship made possible through the generosity of the Ford Foundation and Kappa Delta. In addition, the NYWOD will be prominently and nationally recognized at the National Council Session/Convention and will be invited to serve as consultants to GSUSA; NYWOD may be as asked to take part in speaking engagements, surveys, webinars or other activities that influence the Girl Scout experience.

Research shows that Girl Scout alumnae represent 70 percent of women serving in Congress and 66 percent of women of professional achievement. Illustrious alumnae include Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States; Eileen Collins, the first woman space shuttle commander; Dr. Drew Gilpin Faust, the first female president of Harvard University; and Katie Couric, the first woman to anchor a network evening newscast.

Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts will gather for a great day at the renovated State Capitol. The day will include tours of the State Capitol and a House of Delegates Chamber presentation, where girls will actually sit in a member’s seat and have a mock legislative session. Participants will need to take an excused absence from school – a letter will be provided for this purpose.

Choose Respect is an initiative that helps teens form healthy relationships to prevent dating violence before it starts. This national effort helps parents, caregivers, older teens, educators, and other caring adults motivate teens to challenge harmful beliefs about dating violence and take steps to form healthy and respectful relationships. The Trainings offer information and resources for use at home, at school, and in the community to help teens learn about healthy relationships and making the right choices.The Choose Respect program is a national program in response to alarming reports of physical, verbal, emotional abuse dating from youth across the country.

In her video presentation, the Girl Scout Gold Award recipient is to comment on her project, “Why did I pick this project? What impact do I want this project to have on the community now and in the future?” The edited comment will be no longer than 1.5 minutes long. Girls are to come professionally attired and can bring props such as displays, exhibits, etc.

You must set up an appointment through Janice Williams prior to attending the video taping on either February 19th, March 5th or March 6th. Medical Science Career Day is a day long program designed to help young girls grades 4-12 learn about science and technology in various medical research fields in an interactive environment. Girls will be introduced to the world of science through stations set up for various branches of scientific research; immunology, cancer research, bio-mechanical engineering, pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry, genetics, public heath, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and much more. Throughout the day, the girls will get to meet female scientists, take tours of the campus, and visit actual labs to see medical research first hand. A pizza lunch will be provided to all attendees. Parents and leaders are welcome to stay for the entire event although there will already be chaperons present. Girl Scouts Science Day is to educate young girls about possible careers in the science/medical/dental field.

Theatre IV invites Girl Scouts to attend a show at a great price that includes a Theatre IV patch, as well as a free ticket for groups of 10 or more. Backstage tours, talk backs and meet and greets with the casts are available at no additional charge for groups of 15 or more. All shows, except the Velveteen Rabbit, are presented at the historic Empire Theatre – 114 West Broad Street. The Velveteen Rabbit will be presented at 1601 Willow Lawn Drive. Because of the success and continued use of this grant, the council was named Community Partner Telework!VA Champion for all their hard work in creating a Telework program for staff members to participate in. In early 2010, the United States Department of Agriculture granted Girl Scout Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia a Certificate of Merit for five years of conducting programs to improve lives and communities through USDA Rural Youth Development programs. Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of VA (GSCC) builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. On March 4^th –March 12^th Girl Scout representatives from the council met over cookies and milk with the mayors of Emporia, Colonial Heights, Fredericksburg, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Richmond, respectively, to discuss how proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Sale not only fund troop program activities, but also allow Girl Scouts to sponsor service projects that benefit the community.

In their talks, the Girl Scouts asked their respective mayor how they could help his/her community overcome a challenge it faces. Taking place one week prior to Girl Scout Week, the meeting coincided with the 98^th anniversary of the founding of the first Girl Scout Troop on March 12, 1912. The Giant Martin announcement received a lot of attention in the media. Some leaders expressed their disappointment with the grocer’s decision not to permit Girl Scout Cookie Booth sales on their premises. In response, grocery store chains and other businesses contacted the council offering to help. Below is a list of prospects troops can consider to setup a Girl Scout Cookie Booth on Saturdays between March 6-27 (some businesses will permit weekday setups). Once you have confirmed your Cookie Booth setup date, place contact Joy Winfree, jwinfree@comgirlscouts.org so that she can post it on the council’s website.

This is just one option Girl Scouts select to sell cookies. The Giant/Martin announcement brought great interest from the public regarding the plight of the Girl Scout Cookie Sale program, prompting additional businesses to offer their premises in support of an American tradition that began in 1917.

Girl Scout Commonwealth Council thanks the business community throughout the council’s 31 counties and 6 cities jurisdiction for its generous outpouring of support of the Girl Scout Cookie Sale. Girl Scout Commonwealth Council Statement Regarding Giant/Martin Sidewalk Vending Policy

Last week, the Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of VA, Inc. received news of the Giant/Martin policy that does not make provisions for sidewalk vending at any of their stores. Throughout the years, numerous businesses in the community have welcomed the Girl Scouts by traditionally permitting sidewalk vending sales and this is the case for the 2010 Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program now in progress.

The Girl Scout’s motto is “Be Prepared”. The council has provided Girl Scout troops with a list of alternate business categories where Girl Scout troops can seek other opportunities to host their Girl Scout Cookie Sale booths.

We invite the public to visit the Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of VA Inc.’s website http://www.comgirlscouts.org/ to find a listing of Girl Scout Cookie Sale Booth sites throughout the council’s 30 counties six city jurisdiction beginning February 23, 2010.

Girl Scout Commonwealth Council is happy to announce opportunity to host cookie booth sales at the Richmond International Raceway. All troops who desire to participate may enter their application using the instructions below. Participants will be selected from a lottery process.

The following are the participation guidelines:

Each troop will submit their application to participate beginning 9 a.m. February 15, 2010 and ending 5 p.m. February 19, 2010 via the e‐mail process indicated below.
Snail mail entries must be postmarked no later than February 19, 2010.
The troop application will be placed in a lottery and randomly drawn for each available slot.
The troop will be notified of its selection. If the troop selected is not able to fill that specific slot,they will be placed back into the lottery and the next drawn troop with be assigned.
BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED SLOTS AVAILABLE, TROOPS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SPECIFY A TIME SLOT.
Girls MUST be identifiable as Girl Scouts by wearing minimally the GS Sash, preferably GS T‐shirt or Troop T‐Shirt.
Each booth MUST be managed by the girls, supported by the minimum Safety‐Wise required adult presence.

Troops will have 5 days to confirm their selection; otherwise their submission will be withdrawn from the lottery.

Please do not call Richmond International Raceway. All booth assignments are to be made by the council. Troops who do not honor this request will be disqualified from participation.

GSCC is seeking Girls from all levels, Daisy –Ambassador to participate in an event, Cookies and Milk with the Mayor! We need girls who are strong, articulate, and not afraid to speak to the Mayor.

At this meeting, the girls will speak about how:

Girl Scout Cookies are a familiar part of American culture. For more than 80 years, Girl Scouts, with support from their families, have sold cookies to fund local Scouting programs.
Proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program sponsor community service projects and provide girls with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to become future leaders through the program’s business and economic literacy activities.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program helps girls learn about leadership and business, practice goal-setting, put the Girl Scout Promise and Law into action, and develop self-confidence.
Every troop is encouraged to set realistic sales goals and determine how to spend proceeds, either through a learning activity such as a field trip or a community service project.

This project is looking for girls from all 6 major areas that the council serves, and at least 6 girls from each of these areas. This is not just for Charmers, but for all Girl Scouts who want to showcase the great things that they do in Girl Scouting and the accomplishments that have taught them great leadership skills.

Announcing three scholarship opportunities for Girl Scouts in the 12th grade.

Girl Scout Leadership Award Scholarship – Girl Scout Leadership Scholarships are awarded annually to girls who have been in the Girl Scout program for three consecutive years (including this year), and are currently registered members of the Girl Scout Commonwealth Council. The Girl Scout must be a graduating 12th grade student and have gained admission to an institute of higher education such as a college, business, trade or technical school. Teen Girls of Distinction Award – Recipients will receive a continuing education scholarship based on the recommendation of the review committee comprised of community leaders. Five scholarships are given to outstanding 12th graders whose individual achievement in the community set them apart as leaders. Honorees have exemplified extraordinary leadership skills and carry forth Girl Scouting principles while enhancing their own leadership styles, developing critical thinking and sound decision making skills as they become tomorrow’s leaders. Lillie C. Branch Scholarship Award– In honor of former council CEO Lillie C. Branch, a continuing education scholarship will be established to commemorate her stellar example. The ideal candidate will have made significant contributions to the enrichment of the lives of citizens in her community through community service and advocacy. Universal Leaf Tobacco Company Does a Good Turn

There was buzzing in the air, but it wasn’t from bees and rat-a-tat-tat sounds that did not sound quite like the kind woodpeckers make. Swishing sounds accompanied by the smell of fresh paint rounded out this unique woodland symphony. These sounds were not your typical laughter- and- crackling- fire medley usually heard at a Girl Scout camp. But on October 30th beginning at 9 a.m., a special “corporate troop” of 40 Universal Leaf employees “struck up the band” in a special way by “doing a good turn daily “ for the Girl Scouts of Commonwealth Council. They spruced-up Pamunkey Ridge Girl Scout Camp (PRGSC).

“In the fall of 2008 in response to the United Way’s Day of Caring, Universal Leaf Tobacco Co., Inc. agreed to come to PRGSC to assist with special buildings and grounds projects, Pat Coates, the council's Property Manager, recalled. “ When no group signed up for Pamunkey Ridge in 2009, I contacted Michelle Bailey in the Universal Leaf’s personnel office, because of their apparent fondness of the property and the commitment to service the employees demonstrated previously. I was elated when the employees agreed, by consensus, that they would really enjoy coming back to PRGSC”, Pat said.

This valuable contribution of time and resources to enhance the Girl Scout campers’ enjoyment of camp was greatly appreciated, particularly during these challenging economic times. “I would estimate that their contribution of talent and time provided $5,000 in assistance to our council,” said Pat. “While they had fun working, they worked almost nonstop.”

These men and women volunteered their time and talents for a cause that was music to our ears. Within a little less than two hours, the “corporate troop” had replaced and installed 320 feet of fencing at the equestrian center and pasture. Throughout the day, paint brushes and smaller paint rollers were loaded up, and rolled on the exterior of Carroll Cottage, the infirmary, two staff houses, the camp office and the bike storage building. “Universal Leaf provided a certificate of insurance naming our council as an additional insured", said Pat.

The council provided snacks and the “corporate troop” brought their own drinks in large ice-filled coolers. Universal Leaf arranged to have the Smokey Pig in Ashland cater lunch for their employees as well as council property staff who assisted with the work. Derek Baliles, a GSCC part-time employee, brought his boom box with disco music and favorites from the past. Everyone had a great time dancing and singing along with the music as they painted!

A number of employees commented on how well organized everything was for the projects, and they liked working close together as a group. Several individuals mentioned that the employees in their accounting department had wanted to come back again this year, but they had deadlines they needed to meet, so they couldn’t attend.

It’s Fall Nut Sale time at GSCC, and as a token of appreciation for a job well done, each “corporate troop” member was give a special treat. They were very pleased and clapped and cheered when it was announced that they could choose a can from the selection of nuts and other goodies presented to the group.

Two of the ladies who had been to the camp for the previous Day of Caring in 2008 asked if they could walk to the village and check on their painting project from the previous year. They returned and commented that, “it still looked great.”

At the end of the day, they all had something nice to say. They stood back and were pleased with what they had accomplished. The group worked until 3:15 p.m. Some of the employees stayed longer to help gather supplies and clean up the work areas.

Girl Scouts ayuda a las niñas a desarrollar valor, confidencia y carácter, que hacen del mundo un lugar mejor. El Movimiento de Girl Scouts se ha comprometido a extender la experiencia de Girl Scouts a todas las niñas. Girl Scouts Commonwealth de Virginia ha puesto en marcha una iniciativa hispana para servir a las niñas latinas que viven dentro de la jurisdicción del consejo que incluye a 30 condados y las ciudades de Richmond, Emporia, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, Fredericksburg y Hopewell.

El segmento de más rápido crecimiento de la población en los Estados Unidos es la comunidad hispana / latina. El consejo se ha comprometido a llegar a través de un programa de calidad, así como valiosa información y recursos en español para iniciar un diálogo sobre cuestiones que son importantes para las jóvenes latinas. Se ha comenzado la traducción de los documentos del Consejo tales como la aplicación de voluntarios y formas de referencia, y está estudiando los documentos de formación para iniciar el proceso de traducción.

It’s Electric III – Powerful Knowledge for Girl Scouts - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Girls push boundaries, test limits, and look at the world around them with inquisitive eyes. They're natural scientists! Girl Scouts introduces girls of every age to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities that are relevant to everyday life. Whether they're discovering how a car's engine runs, becoming math whizzes, or learning about careers in STEM fields, girls are moving forward into the future. They can host science fairs, design Web sites, plan for space exploration, visit geological sites and more.

On Saturday, October 17, Dominion Virginia Power’s Innsbrook Technical Center in Glen Allen, Virginia was lit up with the energy of over 140 Girl Scouts and from the Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of VA, Inc. as Dominion hosted “It’s Electric III”. Girl Scouts in grades 7 – 12 learned about how electricity works, how it is generated and distributed, and how to be safe around electricity at the third production of this interactive and enlightening event.

The event, which was sponsored by Dominion, described educational and career opportunities for the young women, focusing on their math, science, and technical skills. The Girl Scouts and their leaders learned practical examples of how electricity works in our everyday lives. Through exposure to people who have made science a part of their work lives, the girls could envision science and engineering as viable career paths.

Thanks to Dominion’s experienced engineers, biologists and professional women, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Women in Engineering societies, and student engineers from Virginia Commonwealth University, the Girl Scouts and their leaders now know much more about the power of electricity. They learned about the physics of electrical current, the generation and transmission of electricity from the different power plant to our homes, conservation of our natural resources, and proper safety behavior around common electrical sources.

Girls were able to ride a bicycle to generate electricity, see the power grid of electrical distribution in Virginia, design circuits for lighting and audio, understand the environmental impact of the many different ways to generate electricity, and learn their responsibility to use electricity wisely.

Girls heard directly from numerous female engineers and scientists what it takes to become an engineer or scientist, and the exciting experiences theses careers can yield. From rocket launches at Cape Canaveral to radar systems on huge ships to controlling megawatts of nuclear energy, these girls understand that after the basics of math and equations, engineering takes you to much more. Students from India and the Middle East and engineers who have traveled to Europe and Asia, shared facts about using electricity in these countries and what education and technology has meant to them.

The girls received the It’s Electric III patch, an It’s Electric T-Shirt, handouts about electricity and conservation, and a back pack filled with gifts. They completed several requirements from the Girl Scout Electricity, Electronics, and Engineering patches and the Eco-Action, Planet Power, and Building a Better Future journeys.

The leaders also received training in the new Leadership Essentials and The Girl Awards process. Through this grant from Dominion Virginia Power, the council will have electronic Snap Circuit kits, which were available for leaders to check out once they had received a short training.

Girl Scout Commonwealth Council Launches Hispanic Initiative

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.The Girl Scout Movement is committed to extending the Girl Scouting experience to all girls. Girl Scout Commonwealth Council has launched a Hispanic Initiative to serve the many Latina girls that live within the council’s jurisdiction which includes 30 counties and the cities of Richmond, Emporia, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, Fredericksburg and Hopewell.

The fastest growing segment of the population in the United States is the Hispanic/Latino community. The council is committed to reach out by providing a quality program as well as valuable information and resources in Spanish to begin a dialogue on issues that are important to young Latinas. The highest Latina populations in the council's service area include Fredericksburg (11%), Stafford (9%), Spotsylvania (8%), Chesterfield (8%) and Richmond, Henrico and Prince George (5%), respectively.

In October 2009 Milagros Richards was hired to oversee the Hispanic Initiative. Milagros is a former council trainer and leader who is fluent is 120 dialects of Spanish, and is a certified First Aid and CPR trainer for the American Red Cross where she conducts classes in Spanish. She has begun translating council documents such as the volunteer application and reference forms, and is looking at training documents to begin the process of translating them.

By December 2009, the council plans to convene a committee of staff members and Latina volunteers that will spend the next year strengthening our knowledge of the culture and local Hispanic communities. One of their charges will be to develop an active Latina outreach program. Additionally the committee will be asked to develop a plan of work to serve and retain the adults and girls we currently have, as well as discuss the feasibility of developing a patch program that will educate girls about the Hispanic culture including a possible council event.

Girl Scout Commonwealth Council trailblazer leaves behind a lasting legacy

Alice R. Calloway, an activist for racial justice, and one of the founding members of the first African-American Girl Scout Troops south of the Mason-Dixon Line, died recently at her Westminster-Canterbury, Virginia residence - She was 90.

Mrs. Calloway once told a reporter for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, “I wanted to be a Girl Scout in the worst way.” Her dreams were realized in the summer of 1932 when, at the age of 14, in the midst of the Great Depression, she helped establish Troop No. 34. Richmond, Virginia, at the time, became the first city in the South to offer a Girl Scouting program to African-American girls.

Mrs. Calloway was a trailblazer in her own right as she helped desegregate Richmond during the civil-rights movement. Her efforts for integration began during the summer of 1932 as a 14-year-old, in the midst of the Great Depression.

Girl Scout Commemorative Coin Act is Law

President Barack Obama signed the Girl Scouts of USA Commemorative Coin Act today, October 29, 2009 at a ceremony held at the White House in the Oval Office. The ceremony included Connie L. Lindsey, GSUSA’s National President; Laurie Westley, Senior Vice President, and girls from the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital. Congress authorizes the minting of only two commemorative coins each year, so it is quite an honor for Girl Scouting and the millions of women who have been touched by our Movement. What a wonderful gift with which to honor Juliette Gordon Low just two days before her birthday!

I want to express my gratitude to the tens of thousands of supporters from all over the nation who sent more than 40,000 messages in support of the bill to their members of Congress. It clearly made a difference. The bill received very strong support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. When the House took up the bill, a number of the members recognized how great the bipartisan effort had been. “See, Madam Speaker, only the Girl Scouts could bring such bipartisan fellowship here so quickly in a bill,” said Congressman Jack Kingston, who sponsored the legislation. And, U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee also acknowledged the fellowship and collaboration, saying: “This is the true spirit of bipartisanship, and I am delighted that we are rising today to support this very fine bill to honor the Girl Scouts with this coin.” Senator Susan Collins, who was once a Girl Scout and is a co-leader of the Honorary Congressional Girl Scout Troop in Congress, introduced the Senate bill in February. ``The Girl Scouts have a tremendous history which should be celebrated and remembered, `` said Senator Collins. ``The character, volunteerism, and leadership skills that Girl Scouts build contribute greatly to our society.

The Girl Scouts Centennial Commemorative Coin will be minted in 2013, marking the end of the celebration of our first 100 years, and the beginning of our second century of leadership. That the signing of the bill comes almost exactly on Daisy Low’s birthday is so special, and I can’t imagine a more fitting use of the proceeds from the sale of the coin than for much-needed restoration and improvements to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace in Savannah.

Our Movement has thrived since Daisy Low gathered together those first Girl Scouts in 1912. She would be proud indeed of all that our Movement has accomplished since then. Once again, congratulations to everyone in Girl Scouting for making the Girl Scouts Centennial Commemorative Coin possible.

Michelle Obama Becomes National Honorary President of Girl Scouts of the USA
